The main purpose of this article is to evaluate empirically the demographic and economic importance of Lusofonia (the Portuguese speaking countries, excluding East-Timor) in the World, using the Penn World Tables of Summers and Heston. A comparison is made between the growth dynamics in each CPLP (Comunidade de Países de Língua Portuguesa) member country, the technological leader (USA) and the World Economy, in years 1960-1996. A detailed study of sigma convergence and beta convergence focused in the Lusofonia geographical space is also made, using statistic and econometric methods (a dispersion measure of per capita GDP, traditional OLS method and panel data estimations with fixed effects).
